Built for freeze-thaw
NOAA's engineering weather data for Boise records an average of about 78 freeze-thaw cycles a year. Exterior concrete in Boise needs to be designed for that. Air-entrained concrete, proper finishing that doesn't overwork the surface, no extra water added at the site, and careful curing are what keep driveways and patios from scaling and flaking. Ask the contractor what mix they'll order and whether it's air-entrained.
Frost and base
The City of Boise's adopted code amendments set a 24-inch minimum frost depth for footings. Flatwork such as driveways and patios isn't usually founded that deep, so a compacted, well-draining aggregate base is what protects it from frost heave. Water collecting under slabs freezes and lifts them. Grade so water runs away from slab edges, and keep downspouts from discharging onto concrete.
Snowmelt and drainage
The National Weather Service describes Boise as semi-arid, with around 20 inches of snow in an average year and most precipitation falling from November through May. Snowmelt running across driveways and refreezing creates ice. Slope slabs to drain, and consider where meltwater from roofs will land.
Deicers
Deicing salts can damage concrete, especially in its first winter and on decorative surfaces. Sand provides traction without chemical damage. Sealing exterior concrete helps resist freeze-thaw and deicer damage; reseal as recommended.
Summer pours
Boise summers are hot and dry, and dry air pulls moisture from fresh concrete. Contractors cure slabs carefully to prevent surface cracking.
Driveway approaches
Replacing a driveway approach usually needs a permit from the City of Boise or Ada County.
Before you hire
Ask Boise concrete contractors what mix they'll use, whether it's air-entrained, how they'll prepare the base and drainage, how they'll cure the slab, and whether they recommend sealing. Look up the contractor's Idaho registration with DOPL.
Cracks and repair
In a freeze-thaw climate, small cracks let water in, and that water freezes and widens them each winter. Sealing cracks before winter slows the damage. Sunken sections near the garage or house that tilt water toward the foundation should be lifted or replaced. Surface scaling on an older driveway may be resurfaced if the slab below is sound, but widespread scaling, crumbling or heaving usually means replacement.
Timing your project
Most Boise flatwork is scheduled from spring through fall, when temperatures make pouring and curing easier. Book early, since concrete contractors' calendars fill in spring.
Stamped and decorative concrete
Stamped and colored concrete is popular for Boise patios. In a freeze-thaw climate, sealer maintenance and avoiding deicing salts matter even more on decorative surfaces.
Roots and utilities
Call 811 before excavation so buried utilities are marked, and point out irrigation lines, which are common in Boise yards.
